A Brooklyn teen testified Monday before a grand jury hearing... Officers Eddie Martins and Richard Hall are expected to turn themselves in early next week for arraignment in Brooklyn Supreme Court, sources said. Puerto Rico says over 900 people died of ‘natural causes’ after hurricane: report

Image
The Puerto Rican government said Friday that 911 people died of “natural causes” following Hurricane Maria, according to BuzzFeed News. Karixia Ortiz Serrano, a spokesperson for the Department of Public Safety, told BuzzFeed that the 911 deaths were not related to the hurricane. BuzzFeed reports that none of the bodies were examined by a medical examiner for consideration to be included in the Maria death toll, and Ortiz Serrano said the classifications of death by “natural causes” were made by reviewing records and not inspection by medical examiners. Ortiz Serrano told the outlet that the Puerto Rican government has no official guidelines on what qualifies as a hurricane-delated death. The official Hurricane Maria death toll currently stands at 51. The 911 bodies were cremated before medical examiners looked at them, according to BuzzFeed. Last week, top Democrats called on the Department of Homeland Security to provide accurate death counts following the hurricane. “We

A 77-year-old Houston woman died last monthfrom the same bacteria that killed Zurita, after sustaining cuts on her body in a fall in a flooded house.

Puigdemont Defends Catalan Claim to Independence

Image
Catalonia’s President Carles Puigdemont defended the region’s claim to independence, a move that may cause the Spanish government to begin the process of suspending self-rule within days. In a letter to Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, Puigdemont said his focus for the next two months will be dialogue and called for a face-to-face meeting as soon as possible, insisting the illegal referendum on Oct. 1 gives his government a mandate to found a new republic. The reply was not the clear yes or no that Rajoy had demanded by 10 a.m. on Monday as he sought clarification on whether Puigdemont had in fact declared independence in a speech to the Catalan parliament last week. “More than two million Catalans gave the regional parliament a democratic mandate to declare independence,” Puigdemont said in his letter. “Our proposal for dialogue is sincere, despite all that has happened, but logically it is incompatible with the actual climate of growing repression and threat.” Spain -- back

As man on death row awaits decision about new trial, group protests for his release

A group of 20 people gathered outside the Court of Criminal Appeals to represent the 20 years Rodney Reed has sat in prison. One day after the hearing for Rodney Reed wrapped up, a group of University of Texas students and advocates gathered at the Court of Criminal Appeals to show their support for the man on death row for the 1996 murder of Stacey Stites. For four days this week, Reed's defense argued new evidence shows he did not murder Stites. Reed was sentenced to death in 1998. Many believe evidence points to Jimmy Fennell as the suspect in her murder. Fennell was Stites' fiance and a law enforcement officer when she was found on the side of a Bastrop County Road. After the four-day hearing wrapped up, Judge Doug Shafer said he may need up to two months to give his recommendations to the Court of Criminal Appeals. About 20 UT students and members of the "Free Rodney Reed Campaign" were at the event Saturday, rallying for a new trial for Reed. Twenty

Minnesota Man Lived With Bodies of Mom, Brother for Year

Image
A Minnesota man who lived in a house with the decomposing bodies of his mother and twin brother for about a year said he could not bring himself to report their deaths to authorities. "I was traumatized," Robert James Kuefler told The Associated Press on Saturday. "What would you do?" White Bear Police Capt. Dale Hager said Kuefler, 60, was charged last week with interference with a dead body or scene of death because Kuefler moved his brother's body. Hager said both the brother and the mother died of natural causes in 2015. Several months after their deaths, Kuefler wrote to other family members in a Christmas Card that both were in bad health and could not talk on the phone and did not want visitors. Police didn't find the bodies until September 2016, when a neighbor reported that the Kueflers' lawn in the Minneapolis suburb of White Bear Lake was overgrown. Kuefler told the AP that his mother, 94-year-old Evelyn Kuefler, died in August 2015 and
